Chesham Grammar School is proud to be in partnership with the Astra School Centred Initial Teacher Training 

o offer school based teacher training. Working closely with Bath Spa University, Astra offers the PGCE and QTS routes into teaching.

Over the last ten years, over 550 graduates have gone on to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through Astra, which works with approximately sixty local primary, secondary and special schools.

Astra training blends theory and practice, with both carefully structured school placements and a focus on helping trainees develop an up to date knowledge and understanding of pedagogy in their specialist subject or phase. Astra trainees are supported both by an in school mentor and a team of highly qualified and experienced tutors; almost all training is live and ‘in person’ at  Buckinghamshire schools. Throughout, trainees have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from a range of school contexts.

Whether a recent graduate or a career switcher, Astra training is designed to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to be a successful classroom teacher, who is an expert in their specialist subject. (PRIMARY: ‘an expert in primary education’)

Astra is able to support you as you apply and make your first steps into this challenging, varied and rewarding career, with regular open evenings and school taster placements available for those considering teaching.
