Today we said farewell to our year 11 students who now start their study leave ahead of GCSE examinations. While the vast majority plan to return to CGS in September, this is nonetheless the end of an important chapter in their lives. They have spent the last five years together, joining us very much as children and - quite literally - growing up under our noses. It has been a privilege to work with them and we wish them all the very best in the weeks which lie ahead. We are very much looking forward to welcoming parents to our Leavers' Assembly for year 13s next Thursday. If you have a child in year 13 and would like to attend but have not yet let us know, please complete the MSForm which was sent home last week, by the end of the day on Monday.
WHOLE SCHOOL PHOTO
On Tuesday, we had a whole school photograph taken to mark the 75th anniversary of the school. It took the best part of an hour to get all 1300+ students and 100+ staff into position on the platform. The sight of everyone together in one place at the same time, which due to space restrictions happens very rarely indeed, was quite something! I would like to thank the students for their patience and cooperation, both of which were commented on by staff from Gillman and Soame who did the photograph and all the organisation for us. This should be available for purchase within the next couple of weeks.
MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT
Today, we held a cake sale to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. This was organised entirely by year 13 students, spearheaded by our Head Boy, Thomas helped by our Head Girl, Isobel and Eloise, Shakespeare House Captain. Across the year this team has organised various events to raise money for Macmillan, with their total standing at just over £1,600 which is phenomenal. Very well done and a huge thank you to those involved.
Well done to those students from CGS who performed in Berkhamsted Youth Theatre's excellent performances of The Three Muskateers at The Court Theatre in Tring last weekend. Well done also to Ryan in year 11 who led Bucks to a win over Northants in the County U16 cricket team last weekend. Ryan made 68 off 47 balls, taking 22 runs off one over, with a 6 and four 4s. Meanwhile Elena in year 7 played for Hertfordshire in The Lionel Cox Trophy Tournament, an inter-county event involving 10 counties across the East region of England. It is the biggest event of its kind, involving over 150 players. Elena played in the 12U team, with Herts finishing second overall. Finally, Oscar in year 8 was part of the winning Hertfordshire team in the East Hockey U13 plate final for boys. This took place last weekend and was a tournament between Essex, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Herts won all of their games with Oscar scoring one of the goals in the final. Well done everyone.
YOUNG ENTERPRISE COMPANY PROGRAMME
Every year, lots of our year 12 students take part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme which gives them excellent experience of setting up and running a business. The programme culminates in a Showcase in which 13 teams from local schools were involved with one of our teams, Moodbloom, finishing 2nd. Each of our three teams won an award: Chain of Kindness for Best Innovation, Cuttlering for Best Video and Moodbloom for Best Impact. Well done to everyone for all their hard work over the year and thanks to Mr Stoddern who oversees this and to our Business Advisers who come into school each week to support and guide the students as they work their way through the programme.
CGS TABLE TENNIS CENTRE
Chesham Grammar School Table Tennis Centre is organising a Hard Bat Tournament to raise funds for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. This will take place on Friday 27th May from 7pm to 9.30pm. Anyone can enter and there will be trophies for the overall winner and runner-up as well as for those who win each age category. Details can be found on our website here.
SPORT AT CGS
The summer sports season is underway with 30 year 8 athletes competing at Marlow athletics track in a Bucks event on Tuesday afternoon. Our athletes performed really well with some outstanding results. Well done. The organising member of staff from another school contacted me to comment on the superb conduct and good manners of our students throughout the day which really impressed them. We have also had a couple of cricket fixtures this week v DCGS. While the year 8s were beaten away from home, there were lots of positives as well as excellent performances. Mollie was the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets. Sports fixtures for next week can be found here. FINALLY
Finally, can I end with a reminder of the need to be very careful when dropping your child off at school or picking them up at the end of the day. At both times, there are hundreds of students arriving at or leaving school and anyone driving a car in the vicinity of the school at that time needs to drive slowly and with great caution. Please avoid coming onto the school site at this time; we ask that you drop off and/or collect your child in one of the roads near to the school and that you are considerate of our neighbours when doing so. Thank you.
