Remembering Liberty's Legacy at CGS
The Chesham Grammar School community joined together on Wednesday 26th September to raise funds for local charity Liberty’s Legacy in memory of Liberty Schurer, who lost her battle with cancer one year ago at the age of 14.
Liberty’s sister, Olivia Schurer, a Year 13 student at Chesham Grammar, shared Liberty’s courageous and inspiring story with students and staff last week during school assemblies and lead fundraising activities at school on Wednesday. Olivia said, “As a local community-based charity it’s lovely to see our whole school come together to raise funds for such an important cause.”
Liberty, who lived in Chalfont St Peter all her life, was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare and very aggressive form of bone cancer in September 2016 on her 13th birthday. Donations from the school mufti day, cake sales and other activities have now raised almost £4,000 for research into Ewing’s Sarcoma. Headteacher Annmarie McNaney said, "We have been honoured to support Liberty's sister Olivia, who is in Year 13 at CGS, and her family as they fulfil Liberty's last wish. I am enormously proud of the way in which the whole CGS community has come together and shown such support for Liv, raising so much money for research into Ewing’s sarcoma. Liv delivered incredibly moving assemblies last week right across the school so that all students got to know something about Liberty herself and about her legacy. The response from everyone is testament to Liv's bravery and to that of Liberty herself."
Liberty's wish upon discovering her terminal prognosis was that her family raise funds in her name for research into Ewing’s Sarcoma. She did not want any child to suffer as she had, nor any other family to be ripped apart in the same way, nor did she want to be forgotten. Since February 2018, Liberty's Legacy has been a special tribute fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, the UK's leading charity dedicated to fighting primary bone cancer. Any money raised is used specifically for life saving research into Ewing's Sarcoma, as was Liberty's wish.
